This guide gives you a breakdown of five major Sharjah free zones: SRTIP (Sharjah Research Technology and Innovation Park), SHAMS (Sharjah Media City), SAIF Zone (Sharjah Airport International Free Zone), HFZA (Hamriyah Free Zone Authority), and SEDD (Sharjah Economic Development Department). SRTIP — Lowest Entry Cost with a Tech-First Ecosystem

License Cost

SRTIP offers business licenses starting from AED 5,500. You can register your company by simply paying the license fee which is the major advantage for early-stage startups and solo entrepreneurs.

What You Get

  • Access to over 1,500 business activities spanning tech, R&D, consultancy, trading, services, and e-commerce
  • A single license that can cover multiple activity types including commercial, services, and professional
  • Dual license capability, allowing businesses to operate on the UAE mainland from a free zone entity
  • No NOC required from a current employer to set up
  • No minimum share capital deposit required
  • 100% foreign ownership with full repatriation of profits

The SRTIP Advantage: Beyond Just Licensing

SRTIP (now also known as SPARK) operates within Sharjah’s University City, embedded alongside over 150 academic and research institutions. Businesses here gain access to:

  • SoiLAB — Sharjah’s first Open Innovation Lab, equipped with 3D printers, CNC routers, laser studios, metalworking, and woodworking facilities
  • 13 flexible event and collaboration spaces
  • A research and investment ecosystem attracting hundreds of millions of US dollars annually
  • Partnerships with American University of Sharjah, University of Sharjah, and global entities
  • The SPARK AI Hub — a dedicated infrastructure for AI startups

For tech companies, research-driven businesses and innovation startups, this academic-government-industry triple helix is unmatched by any other Sharjah free zone.

Setup Time

Company setup in SRTIP typically takes 2 to 5 business days. The process is straightforward: choose your activity, select a company name, submit passport copies and required documents, sign the lease agreement, and receive your license.

SHAMS (Sharjah Media City) — Popular for Freelancers & Digital Startups

License Cost

SHAMS licenses start from around AED 5,750 for a basic package without visa allocation. However, when factoring in office space (at minimum a flexi-desk) and a single visa, total costs typically run from AED 13,000 to AED 25,000 for a complete setup. Multi-year packages are available, offering discounts for businesses planning to commit long-term.

What You Get

  • Over 2,000 available business activities — the widest range among Sharjah free zone
  •  Up to 6 visas on a shared desk option
  • No audit report required for renewal (unlike SAIF Zone)
  • Remote setup possible — no UAE presence required
  • No NOC required

Best For

SHAMS was launched in 2017 for media, creative, and digital entrepreneurs. It’s particularly popular with freelancers, consultants, digital agencies and e-commerce operators. Its flexible packages and absence of physical presence requirements make it one of the most accessible free zones in the UAE.

Key Limitation vs. SRTIP

SHAMS does not offer a dual license for mainland operations, nor does it provide the R&D infrastructure or academic partnerships that SRTIP delivers. If your business is innovation-driven or requires lab access and institutional collaboration, SHAMS does not offer these.

SAIF Zone — Best for Trade, Logistics & Airport-Adjacent Operations

License Cost

SAIF Zone license packages start from AED 10,800 (with 3 visa quotas), making it pricier than both SRTIP and SHAMS at entry level. The most common packages are a trading or services license at AED 13,500, and a general trading or multi-activity license at AED 21,000. SAIF Zone issues licenses on the same day of application.

What You Get

  • Instant license issuance on day of application
  • Air-conditioned, fully furnished offices, warehouses with built-in office space, and customisable industrial plots
  • Up to 3 resident visas on standard packages; more with larger facilities
  • Proximity to Sharjah International Airport — ideal for import/export and freight businesses
  • Access to petrol stations, banks, restaurants, clinics, and a post office within the free zone

Key Consideration

SAIF Zone requires an audit report from the second renewal onwards. Share capital of AED 150,000 must be declared in founding documents (though it does not need to be deposited). Activity categories are kept confidential and must be verified case by case. SAIF does not offer a dual license for mainland activity.

HFZA (Hamriyah Free Zone) — Sharjah's Industrial Powerhouse

License Cost

HFZA license costs start from AED 8,800, with complete setup packages including a visa starting around AED 13,500. Warehouse setups are considerably higher, with warehousing costs beginning at approximately AED 70,000. Industrial land plots are available from 2,500 sq m upward.

What You Get

  • Over 6,500 businesses from 163+ countries — one of the UAE’s largest free zone communities
  • Direct access to Hamriyah Port, enabling seamless import and export
  • Up to 7 visas without an executive office; up to 50 visas with a warehouse facility
  • Dedicated sectors: oil & gas, food park, maritime, industrial manufacturing, global logistics
  • Competitive land and warehouse rates compared to Dubai equivalents

Best For

HFZA is the go-to choice for manufacturing, heavy industry, logistics, petrochemicals, steel fabrication, and food production companies. It is not the right fit for startups or service-based businesses looking for low-cost, flexible licensing.

SEDD (Sharjah Economic Development Department) — Mainland Commercial Licensing

SEDD governs mainland business licensing in Sharjah rather than operating as a dedicated free zone. It is best suited for businesses that need to operate freely across the UAE mainland, open retail outlets, or serve walk-in customers. Costs vary widely based on business activity, office location, and commercial space requirements. Unlike free zones, SEDD-licensed companies must meet specific premises requirements and may have local partner requirements depending on the activity.

For international entrepreneurs and startups, free zone licensing (particularly SRTIP) generally offers greater flexibility, lower initial costs, and fewer compliance barriers than SEDD mainland licensing.

SRTIP — unique dual license option bridges free zone and mainland

Why SRTIP Stands Out for Innovation-Driven Businesses

While every Sharjah free zone offers the standard benefits — 100% foreign ownership, tax exemptions, and full profit repatriation — SRTIP is the only one that combines the UAE’s most affordable license pricing with a purpose-built innovation ecosystem.

For businesses in technology, AI, research, software development, deep tech, and consultancy, the true cost of a free zone goes beyond the license fee. Access to world-class labs, research collaborators, investor networks, and mentorship infrastructure can accelerate growth in ways that a cheaper desk in a media city cannot replicate.

SRTIP’s dual license capability also removes one of the biggest limitations of free zone companies: the inability to trade directly with the UAE mainland. This positions SRTIP-licensed businesses for broader market reach right from day one.
